About
Cho Eunjoung is a painter based in Seoul, Korea. Working primarily in oil on canvas, she explores inner balance through floating forms, familiar objects, and unconventional spatial arrangements.
Her practice unfolds across two distinct series.
The Shape of Lightness (Lightness Series, 2025–) explores the weight of emotions and the conditions that allow them to move toward balance.
The Shape of Distance (Orbit Series, 2026–), the focus of her current practice, examines the distances between people, between the self and its emotions, and among emotions themselves. Using planets and architectural spaces as key visual elements, she questions how the meaning of relationships can shift depending on distance and spatial arrangement.
Although the two series use different visual languages, both explore how inner balance emerges and changes.
Cho has presented her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including her 2026 solo exhibition 《Orbit》 at Gallery Doll in Seoul. She has received support from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and participated in international artist residencies, including Civitella Ranieri Center and Vermont Studio Center. Her work is held in the Art Bank collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
조은정은 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 회화 작가이다. 주로 캔버스에 유화로 작업하며, 부유하는 형상과 익숙한 사물, 비일상적으로 구성된 공간을 통해 ‘마음의 균형’을 탐구한다.
그녀의 작업은 두 시리즈로 전개된다.
The Shape of Lightness (Lightness Series, 2025–)는 감정의 무게와 감정이 균형을 향해 이동할 수 있는 조건을 탐구한다.
The Shape of Distance (Orbit Series, 2026–)는 현재 집중하고 있는 시리즈로, 사람과 사람, 자신과 감정, 감정과 감정 사이의 거리에 주목한다. 행성과 건축적 공간을 주요 시각 요소로 사용하며, 거리와 배치에 따라 관계의 의미가 어떻게 달라질 수 있는지 질문한다.
두 시리즈는 서로 다른 시각 언어를 사용하지만, 마음의 균형이 어떻게 형성되고 변화하며 유지되는가라는 공통된 질문을 공유한다.
조은정은 2026년 갤러리 도올에서 열린 개인전 《Orbit》을 비롯해 다수의 개인전과 단체전에서 작품을 발표해 왔다. 폴록-크래스너 재단의 지원을 받았으며, 치비텔라 라니에리 센터와 버몬트 스튜디오 센터 등 해외 레지던시에 참여했다. 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행에 소장되어 있다.
